Wherigo on Pixel 6

Hi there. I have tried multiple times to run a wherigo on Geooh Go, and invariably I have the following issues:
  • The app doesn't recognize when I'm in the zone. I leave and re-enter multiple times, and eventually it recognizes I'm there when I am near (not in) the zone.
  • The big thing is that after completing a zone the app seems to lock up, and I have to restart it. More than half of the time I have to stop the app, reload the cartridge, and resume a saved game. Eventually it recognizes the zone, but even then it is hours later.
How can I get the app to stop locking up?

Hi Scott,

Some questions that would help:

  • What are the location permission for Geooh (in Android settings)?
  • What are the Wherigo settings in Geooh?
  • Do other wherigo cartridges work? The issue could be related to this particular cartridge in how the owner created it.
  • Does the WhereYouGo app work with this cartridge? Would help determine where the issue is (app or cartridge).

Thank you for the quick response.

What are the location permission for Geooh (in Android settings)?
---- Location access: Allow only while using the app
---- Use precise locations is On

What are the Wherigo settings in Geooh?
---- Wherigo Directory is content://com.android.externalstorage.documents/tree/primary:Download/Wherigo
---- Show Zone Boundary is checked
---- Use Zone Center is checked
---- Close Map on Zone is checked
---- Auto Save Games is checked
---- Keep GPS active is NOT checked
---- Show Internal Errors is NOT checked
---- Misc buttons are all NOT checked
---- First six Preference buttons are checked. The rest are not.
---- Dark Mode

Do other wherigo cartridges work? The issue could be related to this particular cartridge in how the owner created it.
---- I first used/noticed it with GC6XAKZ - Benicia Clock Tower.
---- I have had the same issue with GC5VCX0 - Crazy Clowns on Angel Island
---- ---- GC75Y3B - 1765 Sith Lord Training, and
---- ---- GC3YVRM - Reno History Tour

Does the WhereYouGo app work with this cartridge? Would help determine where the issue is (app or cartridge).
My sister used the WhereYouGo app on her Samsung Galaxy S8 with GC75Y3B - 1765 Sith Lord Training , and it worked just fine. I can't get the WhereYouGo app to recognize the Downloads Folder, so I don't know if that app works on my phone with these cartridges or not.

When it "hangs up" it takes me back to the screen that shows Locations, You See, Inventory, and Tasks. Sometimes it has the current cartridge title, and sometimes it has NO CARTRIDGE LOADED. It always has the little gray "Up Arrow" icon that when pressed asks me to select a cartridge. If I resume the game it usually goes back to the place where it hung up and starts the issue all over again.

It will flash the "You entered the zone" message along the bottom of the screen, but fails to progress. (That part sounds cartridge related. But the return to the menu screen with no cartridge loaded sounds app-related.)

Try checking Keep GPS Active.

So it's not really hanging if returning back to the location screen if a zone is entered. That's the way wherigos work when you complete a task. There should be additional items, locations, or tasks added by the cartridge after triggering the zone. What exactly are you expecting to happen once the zone is entered?  You have Close Map on Zone which told Geooh to exit the map once the zone was entered.

The no cartridge loaded indicates you have exited the cartridge (back buttons) and the player is ready to load another game. I don't think there is a "hang" anywhere. I'm also not getting any bug reports indicating a crash. Check to keep GPS active to see if that helps to enter a zone better and uncheck close map. Not sure what you expect to do once entering the zone anyway other than going back since wherigos don't show more unless a new zone becomes visible once another was entered.... and that will be a new location added.

I'll do that the next time I'm in the field.

Thank you for the lesson on the way a wherigo is supposed to work.  ::)
Perhaps I wasn't clear enough. Forgive me, as I wasn't in the field using the program when I asked the original question and responded to your first RFI.
I complete the task. Check.
The app returns to the location screen. Check.

  • Nope. Sometimes it returns with only the (now) completed task showing in the locations. No new task or location. This happened with all of the cartridges I mentioned. I then have to go through the task again, and again, and again. In this case it's not freezing, but it's not progressing, either.
  • Sometimes it returns and there is a flickering screen, similar to when you are watching a video of a computer screen that is constantly refreshing. In this instance the app is frozen, and I need to completely exit and restart. Sometimes the location has updated, and sometimes the location returns to where I was and I need to redo that task. Many times after completing that task the same issue circles time and time again. Sometimes when the cartridge reloads it returns to the flickering screen mode. Sometimes it freezes.
  • Sometimes it returns to the location screen appearing to have the completed location, but the little gray "up arrow" appears, indicating it wants me to load a cartridge. I have not done anything other than completed the task (answer a question correctly).
  • Sometimes it returns to the location screen with no cartridge loaded. I have not exited the cartridge using back buttons -- it just returns there after I have completed the task.
I used the phrase "hang" to describe all of these conditions, as I don't know how else to describe it. I knew enough to not call it "freeze," yet I think that is how you interpreted it.

Check to keep GPS active to see if that helps to enter a zone better and uncheck close map.
Will do.

I expect that when I enter a zone and the distance shown shows 0 feet that the task is revealed. That in many times it doesn't progress likely isn't an issue with Geooh Go, as I've had that same issue with other apps (both iPhone and Android). But, it does get frustrating to leave and return multiple times with no effect. At that point I don't know if it is related to the cartridge or the issues I am having with the app as I've described herein.

I will attempt to do a wherigo this weekend and take screen shots as I do. Hopefully your box-checking suggestions will help, but if not I'll forward any screen shots.

This is the key item to keep in mind. It's not just how Geooh operates, it's how the cartridge was written. Geooh uses the same internal wherigo engine that WhereYouGo uses so the behavioral logic in a cartridge should be similar. I have no idea what should change to fix something because it's not clear exactly what/where the issue is. If I had multiple users saying the same thing for multiple cartridges, then I would have something to focus on.

Maybe you can message the CO to see what they know should happen when entering a zone... and ask what app they tested the cartridge with. If an iPhone, then we have even greater problems in replicating an issue. For example, Geooh is requesting locations from Android (hopefully they are accurate), then passing those to the 3rd party wherigo engine, which in turns passes in on to the cartridge logic. Too many cooks in the kitchen. Geooh is primarily responsible for UI rendering and major screen navigation. Where is the break in the chain and who is responsible?

If you can determine a pattern when something works or not, when you find yourself at the cartridge load screen unexpected... if there are repeatable steps to get there, then that may be possible for me to replicate and fix. Bottom line I have no idea where the issue is to fix something and making changes blindly could make things worse.

As I said in my original email, the zone issue was likely not a Geooh Go issue.

Again, the big issue is what Geooh Go seems to do on my Pixel 6 when a task is satisfied. It doesn't happen with my sister's Samsung, it doesn't happen with my father's iPhone - only with my Pixel. It seems clear that it is an issue that is unique to this phone. I was hoping there was an experience you had, or a setting that you said would fix the issue, but it appears that is not the case. I will have to install the WhereYouGo program and figure out how to access the correct download folder.

Respectfully,

Scott
